In addition to free licenses for instruction and research, VMware also provides academic institutions and affiliated organizations special discounts on VMware software and support when deployed as a part of their IT infrastructure.

Note that as of May 8, 2022, all VMWare software is no longer available via OnTheHub, and will need to be downloaded from a separate portal.

VMware includes licenses for the following products:

  • Fusion
  • Workstation
  • Server

Pre-Installation Notes

Faculty and Staff:

Faculty and staff can use VMware software under specific program usage guidelines free of charge for academic research and classroom instruction.

Please note that in 2025, VMWare's license model will change to free for personal/academic use and our academic license will be discontinued. You will no longer need to request licenses and can simply access it through the new VMWare Broadcom portal after creating a Broadcom account:

Broadcom - Download VMWare

To download VMware from the Academic VMWare portal instead, please request it from software@lsu.edu.

  • This portal will be discontinued in April 2025. Requests sent from non-LSU email addresses will not be given access to VMWare client.

Students:

Students can install this software on their personal computers as part of their coursework or research projects.
To download VMware client, access it through the new VMWare Broadcom portal after creating a Broadcom account:

  • NOTE: If you are needing to access a specific software to work on a project for your class, please see the following article instead: Virtual Lab (VLab): LSU Overview
