Office365 ProPlus vs Office 2013 ProPlus:

Similarities between Office 365 Proplus and Office 2013 ProPlus: 
  • System Requirements are the same for 365 Proplus as they are for 2013 Proplus
  • Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are avaiable. (Note: 32-bit is recommended, even on 64-bit computers)
  • The programs that come with Office 365 ProPlus are the same as the Programs that come with Office Professional Plus 2013. . 
  • The programs of Office 365 Proplus have the same functionallity as other versions of Office.
  • Several of the tools that are used to deploy and configure Office 365 can still be used. 
  • Office 365 ProPlus program settings can be managed through the same Group Policy settings used with other versions of Office
  • Office 365 ProPlus is locally installed on the users computer, the user does not need to be connected to the internet in order to use the programs. 
Differences between Office 365 ProPlus and Office 2013 ProPlus:

Differences in Licensing:

  • Users are able to install Office365 ProPlus on up to 5 computers with a single license.
  • Office 365 is subsription based (pay per month). If the subscription is cancelled then there is reduced functionality with Office365 ProPlus. In this mode, the user cannnot use many of the features of Office365 ProPlus.  
  • The user must be connected to the internet at least once every 30 days for activation purposes. If this is not done, Office365 ProPlus will go into reduced functionality mode. Once the user connects to the internet, all the features are returned to Office 365 ProPlus. 
  • The user must have an Office 365 account and must have been assigned a license in order to use Office 365 ProPlus. As an administrator, you can remove a user's license or account and that user will have reduced functionality    

Differences in Deployment:

  • Click-to-Run technology is used to install Office 365 Proplue, this allows for a faster installation. 
  • Due to Click-to-Run technology, there is a different way to apply software updates. the default settings allow for automatic updates, but this can be changed to allow updates from a location within the user's own network.
  • A web-based portal is provided where users can install Office 365 ProPlus themselves, but the users must be local administrators on their computers. 
  • Office 365 ProPlus installs as one package meaning that all the Office programs are installed at once unless the user chooses to exclude some programs.  

Other Miscellaneous Differences:

  • Office 365 ProPlus can be used with supported versions of Exchange server or SharePoint Server that are installed on-premises in the users organization. If they are are part of the Office 365 plan, the user can use Office 365 ProPlus with Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. 
  • The files created with Office 365 ProPlus can be stored on the local computer or elsewhere on the network, such as SharePoint site. Office provides cloud-based storage options, but they do not need to be used. 
  • Office Online and Office 365 ProPlus are not the same. Office Online allows the user to open word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote documents in a web browser. Office Online is included with all Office 365 plans.
